Can AI Show Me the Way?

It's the first Wednesday of the month, which means it's the posting day for the Insecure Writer's Support Group! Click here to learn more and sign up!

SO THIS POST WAS *SUPPOSED* TO GO UP AT 3 AM BUT MY BRAIN APPARENTLY MALFUNCTIONED AND I HAD IT SCHEDULED FOR THE TIME I WAS WORKING ON IT YESTERDAY AND I DIDN'T KNOW IT WASN'T UP UNTIL I GOT HOME FROM WORK. SO, YEAH....

Today I'm a co-host! And it's even more exciting because after 2:30 today I'm on vacation from work for my birthday (which is Friday). So after work I'm gonna cozy up with some coffee and get to visiting lots of blogs! The other fabulous co-hosts today are Feather Stone, Kim LajevardiDiedre Knight, and C. Lee McKenzie. Be sure to visit them and give them some love!

This month's optional question is: Do you use AI in your writing and if so how? Do you use it for your posts? Incorporate it into your stories? Use it for research? Audio?

I've never used AI before but I have thought about it. I would never want to use AI to replace any of my actual writing, but I've been wanting to try it out to help me brainstorm. It's just one of those things on the neverending list of things to try in order to help me figure out my book and get back into writing.

I think I've actually blogged about this idea before, but I still haven't tried it. I've wondered if I could have AI read what I've written for my novel so far and then ask it to come up with an ending. I've been so stumped on how to write the last chapter of my book, and while that isn't the only reason I haven't been writing, it is a huge part of it.

I figure this could have a couple different outcomes. Maybe something clicks for me with what the AI gives me and I'm able to figure out the end of my book. I would rewrite it myself, of course, since what I want out of this is ideas, not actual words.

Or just reading what it gives me, even if it isn't any good, inspires me to get back into it myself. Maybe it will help me narrow down some possible endings by seeing that it doesn't work. Or maybe it'll be so bad that something will click in my brain and I'll finally come up with the answer on my own!

Or maybe it'll be so bad that it'll just make for a really funny story that I can write a blog post or make a TikTok about.

Worst case scenario, I'll get nothing from it and just be right where I started. And at least I'll have tried something that I've been meaning to try. I really have no idea how to go about doing this, but that's mostly because while I like to make lists, finishing them is another story.

Would you use AI to help you when you're stuck?

  1. Happy Birthday! I hope you have a good vacation too. I don't see anything wrong with asking Al for some possible story ending ideas, especially since you're stuck. Good luck figuring out your ending. I know you can do it.

  2. I could see that as a legit approach, but I'd probably "phone a friend" instead. Even if I don't end with an idea, I end up with time talking to a friend, so I still win. @samanthabwriter from

  3. Happy Birthday and thank you for co-hosting #IWSG for August. As you have chosen to do, I believe every writer needs to make an individual decision about whether AI is a method of writing they choose to use.

  4. Happy Birthday! And thanks for co-hosting! I like Samantha's idea of "Phoning a friend" But I do view AI as a tool. Mostly. I'd give it a try if I was sure I could be careful enough not lose a WIP, or a limb...or faith in my own abilities. Have a terrific vacation!

  5. It might trigger an idea in you that is far better.
Happy birthday! No worries you are late. Enjoy the rest of your week and thanks for co-hosting.

  7. Happy birthday!
AI is great for brainstorming and coming up with ad copy from your back cover blurb or story description.
    Thanks for co-hosting.

  8. Happy Birthday, Sarah. Thanks for co-hosting. Endings can be tough. It took me forever to end my current WIP. It was worth the wait though.

  9. Happy birthday!

It could inspire some ideas of your own.

  10. Haha. You have reasonable number of options with AI. I like the tiktok one. I am yet to try AI. Thank you for co-hosting.

  11. I wouldn't mind using AI for brainstorming but I don't think I'd input my whole text and ask it for an ending. I'd really like to experiment with it for generating ad copy (as someone above mentioned) and maybe taglines and such.

    1. I'm reluctant to input my whole text, basically giving it to the machine, but wouldn't you have to do that to get it to write a blurb or tagline?

  13. I have used AI as an assistant, not as a content generator. In my August IWSG post I give a simple example. Feel free to pop on over and take a look.
Hope you had a joy-filled birthday and super thanks for co-hosting!

  14. Of course I'd use AI to get ideas for the ending. Isn't that what we do in the real world when we sit around the table at the coffee shop and brainstorm with fellow writers? In this case it's just you and AI (thousands of resources all laid out for you to choose from). I wish I still had my in person group of writers. We had a blast deciding how to kill off the villain or which guy the gal would choose, etc. Sadly everyone has moved away. And I think I'm the only one crazy enough to keep writing! Thanks for co-hosting!

  15. Happy birthday, and thanks for co-hosting this month! Good luck with the ending. I seem to re-write mine a lot, including changing out the perp, which calls for a lot of rewriting... I miss talking the story lines over with writer friends or my spouse. No reason I can't do it with non-writing friends, I guess, or maybe a zoom coffee-klatch.

  16. Hi Sarah!
Thanks for co-hosting IWSG's question this month. You have some solid reasons here as to when and how to use AI. More power to you. Bravo.
This is why I like to talk to other people, writers especially, about my work. Brainstorming aloud with others and listening to them helps me to work out problems and what I'm trying to accomplish in my writing. Have a great day!

  17. Happy birthday, Sarah! I hear you on the list-making. I have them all over the house yet they are suspiciously not-checked-off... Enjoy your free birthday time!

  19. I'm planning to use AI in my next story. Nor for my story, but in my story. Kind of like using it like a magic eight ball. I'll let you know how it goes when I'm done.
